Hanoi is the second largest city and capital of Vietnam, and still demonstrates the influences of both the French and Chinese occupations and the prolonged struggle of the Vietnam War. The city inspired Mark to capture the unusual in the usual and create a set of photographs that have a very distinctive style. Mark uses colour and layering with great effect to create images that hold the viewer’s attention as you discover all the storytelling detail within every picture. There is the juxtaposition of old and new Vietnam, young Hanoians taking ‘selfies’ and buying into big brand labels alongside locals still wearing no-la’s (traditional conical hat) and the orange robes of the Buddhists.
