Exploring the streets of Havana and Trinidad

Cuba: every time a photographer hears about it the instinct to pick up a camera and just go there becomes almost irresistible. La Habana Vieja, el Malecón, el Centro, Trinidad, are some of the most evocative places you can visit as a street photographer. Cigars, rum, 1950s cars, colourful buildings, smiling people and irresistible music are some of the best experiences you can have in Cuba, and we are all familiar with the beautiful images we have seen.

Join us in an immersive and intensive exploration of the streets and people of Havana and Trinidad while we help you take your photography to a new level. The group will be limited to 8 participants and will be led by both of us.

Each day we decide where to go, but will be visiting the following places:

  • La Habana Vieja (Old Havana)
  • El Malecón
  • El Centro (Central Havana)
  • Vedado
  • Fascinating local streets
  • Trinidad

Mark is a National Geographic photographer and was a Nikon Ambassador for years. He has been running professional Street Photography Workshops for more than 10 years.

Flavio is a street photographer with more than 10 years of experience and a talent for teaching the craft. He has been running workshops in London and abroad for the last two years.

Our Travel Workshops are small, with a maximum of 8 people. Every day we split into groups of two and meet up regularly, we will spend time with you individually and mix up the groups regularly, so everyone gets a fair share of our time.

We’ll be with the group every step of the way, from when we meet in the morning, through to critique and dinner in the evening.

We will explore techniques including layering, good use of the environment around you, along with introducing compositional elements that will add depth and detail to your photography.

We’ll support you to get close to the action, helping you to overcome fears about approaching strangers.

Together we will develop your skills in photography, editing and post-processing, helping you to improve all aspects enabling you to create strong and compelling images.

We offer you candid and constructive feedback on a regular basis during the workshop, challenging and stretching you to become a better photographer.

Our workshops are immersive, we visit incredible locations, off the beaten track, getting close to people and places, letting you take shoot photographs you have dreamt of.

You’ll come away with a great understanding of street photography and the elements that make up a great street photograph.

You will finish the course with a strong set of images and a small portfolio that captures the place you have visited.

We stay in touch with most course participants and encourage you to take up personal documentary and street projects that are close to you. We also run a public Facebook group called ‘Shoot The Street’, where you are free to upload both your course images and others you may have taken.

We generally start early in the morning and stay out as long as participants like, then review our images each evening in a group session.

On the first day there will be an introductory briefing about the week ahead, highlighting what we will be looking for and where we will be going each day. We will also give a small presentation on street photography and techniques we can use to produce an interesting portfolio. We will talk about moments, layering, light, working the shot, background selection and more.

Optionally, Flavio can do a morning refresher session on camera settings and controls for street photography on the first day and an evening session on editing and post processing  for street photography.

This workshop is street and travel photography based, with an encouragement to shoot un-posed images containing people in a context that shows the viewer an image that tells a story. Whilst we do take street portraits, this is not the focus of the workshop, but it is fine when kept in context.

We will be with you every step of the way, from when we meet in the morning through to critique and dinner in the evening. We will split in rotating groups of two throughout the day so we will have a chance to shoot with each of the participants but also you will have the opportunity to have some quality 1-2-1 time with us.

What photographic experience do you need?

These workshops are geared towards photographers with at least a basic understanding of the exposure triangle and having familiarity with the camera controls. Although technical advice will be given we won’t be able to concentrate on grasping the basics.

What gear will be needed?

We normally shoot light with one camera body and a single prime lens.

Any camera model/make will be fine, but we encourage the use of a prime lens of choice among 28mm, 35mm or 50mm in full frame terms (that would be around 18mm, 23mm and 35mm in APS-C terms). If you feel more comfortable shooting with a zoom it’s fine.

A laptop with a post-processing program installed, Lightroom or similar. We strongly advise also installing PhotoMechanic for the initial editing: it will save a lot of time. They offer a free 30 day trial, so we suggest installing it just before the workshop date and learning the very basics to be ready for the workshop.

No flash, tripods, long and telephoto lenses will be needed: travel light and you will enjoy the day much more.

Are you ready?

Book it

We will be staying in one of the casas particulares or AirBnBs big enough to host all of us, if possible, in an area that is central or very close to our main destinations in Havana and Trinidad.

We are happy to book it for your convenience, but the accommodation expenses will be equally shared amongst us.

Accommodation costs will be between around £50 or less per night for a single room for 6 nights, from the 14th to the 20th of November 2022, so we will all be ready and in the same place in the morning of the 15th for the briefing and we can all be in the same place for the evening critique sessions.

If you prefer booking your own accommodation, please let us know in advance.

Payment for accommodation is required upon settlement of the full balance at least 6 weeks before the workshop date.

All airfare and travel costs are the attendee’s responsibility, and we will equally share the local transport costs. Each of us, instructors and attendees, will pay for their own meals and drinks.

We don’t offer airfare bookings, but we can give some information and tips for the best flights.

1. All deposits are required at the time of your registration. Full balance payment is required by 6 weeks prior to the workshop date. Reservations for workshops cannot be held without a deposit. We highly recommend you purchase travel insurance for your workshop and travel expenses.

2a. The full balance is due 6 weeks before the workshop start date. Should this final payment fail to be received by the date specified, we reserve the right to treat the reservation as cancelled and retain the deposit. If a reservation is made 6 weeks or less prior to the workshop start date the full amount is payable at the time of reservation. Your attendance is contingent on payment in full prior to the beginning of any workshop. If final payment and paperwork is not received when due, we reserve the right to cancel your reservation, as per the withdrawal and refund policy below.

2b. Payments for private photography workshops: The total is due upon booking your Private Photography Workshop. If you register 6 weeks or less before the workshop begins, a deadline for return of the completed paperwork will be mutually agreed upon. These two forms must be completed, signed and returned to our office via email or mail before your final payment is due, so we may best prepare for your workshop participation. If you book on shorter notice before a workshop begins, a timeline will be agreed upon for the forms to be completed and returned. Approximately thirty days before your workshop begins, you will receive a welcome email that includes recommendations of photo gear, clothing to bring and other pertinent information.

4. “Shoot The Street” (from now on referred to as STS) requires all workshop participants to complete and sign a Liability Waiver form with the Participant Profile form. STS and our instructors are not liable for injury, accident or theft resulting from participation in our workshop program. It is the participant’s responsibility to obtain information about any risks involved. When it is reasonably practicable STS will work with you to reschedule the workshop on mutually agreeable dates. The cost for each workshop is listed on the individual workshop description page. STS may be compelled to amend prices and reserves the right to do so without prior notice.

10. The type of workshops we offer requires flexibility and must allow for alternatives. For this reason, the workshop description must be taken as an indication of what may take place, and not as a contractual obligation.

11. Workshop participants must provide their own photography gear and laptop computer, appropriate clothing and footwear, sun protection and insect repellent and any basic equipment needed for day to day necessities..

12. STS photography workshops are within the abilities of average people in good health. By reserving a space in a workshop with a deposit, completing the Participant Profile form, and paying the balance due, you certify that you do not knowingly have any physical or other conditions of disability that would create a risk for you or other workshop participants or workshop staff. The workshop instructor’s judgment shall provide the final determination of an individual’s ability to participate in or continue a workshop and STS is not liable for any refund of any kind. Workshop participants must be aware that participation in a workshop may involve interaction that could potentially lead to injury, sickness or even death. Workshop participants are voluntarily participating in these activities and interactions with knowledge of the danger involved and agree to assume any and all risks of bodily injury, death, property damage, or other loss, whether those risks are known or unknown. Workshop participants are expressly assuming the risks associated with their participation in this workshop. Workshop participants are expressly assuming the risks associated with the current Covid-19 pandemic and continue this activity following STS Covid-19 safety precautions, as well as the safety directives from the local government directives. STS accept no responsibility for losses or additional expenses due to delay or changes in flight or other services, sickness, weather, floods, strike, war, civil disturbance, industrial action, volcanic eruption, terrorist acts, political unrest, quarantine, sickness, or other causes. All such losses or expenses would have to be borne by the workshop participant, as workshop fees provide for arrangements only for the times and locations stated. Baggage is at the owner’s risk entirely. The right is reserved to 1) make any changes in the itinerary or transport where deemed necessary, or caused by changes in flight schedules or equipment substitution; 2) cancel any workshop prior to departure, in which case full refund of the paid workshop funds will be given, but STS is not responsible for any other workshop preparation expenses such as penalized or non-refundable air tickets, visa fees and medical related expenses; 3) substitute workshop instructor(s) for the instructor(s) originally specified, in which case the substitution is not a basis for participant cancellation or refund other than provided by our normal cancellation policy; or 4) accept or retain any person as a member of any workshop. Workshop prices are based on tariffs and exchange rates in effect at the time of publication and are subject to adjustment in the event of any change therein. A Participant Profile Form including the Waiver of Liability form must be signed by each participant prior to the commencement of the workshop. Participation by any workshop member will be declined in the absence of the signed Participant Profile Form including the Waiver of Liability Form, with no workshop fee refund. No modification to the Participant Profile Form and the Waiver of Liability Form will be accepted. Should STS or anyone acting on their behalf be required to incur attorney’s fees and costs to enforce this agreement, the enrolling workshop participant(s) agree(s) to indemnify and hold them harmless for all such fees and costs. In the event a lawsuit is filed, the enrolling participant(s) agree(s) to do so solely in the United Kingdom. We highly recommend you purchase travel insurance for your workshop and travel expenses.

14. The workshop participant must communicate any perceived failure in the performance of this contract on the spot to the instructor thus giving the instructor the opportunity to achieve a satisfactory solution for the workshop participant. Should this not be possible, you should make your complaint known to us in writing within 28 days of the completion of the workshop.

15. STS Photography workshops costs include photography instruction and guide services. Not included are airfare or other transportation from your home to the trip staging location and local transportation, airport departure taxes, accommodation, meals, insurance (medical and travel), beverages, alcoholic beverages and bar expenses, tips and gratuities to local guides and people, phone calls, passport or visa expenses, laundry or items of a personal nature. In some locations, clients with single rooms are infrequently compelled to share a room due to circumstances beyond our control. Some interesting photographic destinations are located away from modern amenities and where necessary we will be accommodated in simple lodgings. Meals are always a great place for camaraderie and the opportunity they provide to make new friends and try new food. Options at meal, for vegetarians, vegans or other food preferences or intolerances cannot be guaranteed. Participants are responsible for their own beverages including bottled water, soft drinks and alcoholic beverages on all photography workshops at all meals. Our itineraries are intended as examples only. Participants should allow for flexibility due to changes in weather, natural or cultural events, or other logistical arrangements deemed necessary by STS or the instructors. If only one space remains for a workshop, and logistics permit, we accept two persons traveling together, even if it exceeds the trip maximum.

16. Travel insurance: We highly recommend you purchase travel insurance for your workshop and travel expenses. We suggest a plan which offers coverage for medical and dental emergencies, medical evacuation (especially internationally), lost baggage, missed connections, and trip interruption/cancellation. STS is not responsible for cancellations due to medical, employment or home emergencies or for reimbursement of non-refundable airline tickets or other travel expenses in the event of a workshop cancellation.

17. By completing the Participant Profile and Waiver of Liability Form, you are agreeing to accept all the above conditions. The person who completes the two forms does so on behalf of all the individuals included on it, so that all are bound by the registration conditions.
